![]() ![]() Once complete, Buckhead Park Over GA400 will raise the profile of Atlanta as a visionary 21st-century metropolis, becoming a signature element of the city that will contribute to both the local economy and the quality of life, much like the famed linear parks of Paris and New York. The park is conceived as a model for the multimodal future of Atlanta, improving walkability and access to commuter rail transportation and encouraging non-motorized traffic into and across the park through activated pedestrian paths. ![]() Spanning the length of the park, an allée of high-canopied pines provides a defining structural element to the space. The park design provides distinct experiences, including a commons for picnics and casual gatherings, a grand plaza with vibrant edges, and lush gardens for immersive nature and art walks. Over the past two decades of practice Thomas and his team have infused narratives of the land into the places where people live, work, and play, engendering stewardship and inspiring connections between people and the natural world. Buckhead Park Over GA400 will physically reconnect this neighborhood known for high-end development, malls, and traffic congestion while providing multiple benefits and much-needed park space. Thomas Woltz is the owner of Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects. Slicing through the heart of Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood, the freeway has fragmented the community for many years. As principal of Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects (NBW), a 45-person firm based in Charlottesville, Virginia and New York City, Woltz has infused narratives of the land into the places where people live, work and play, deepening the public’s enjoyment of the natural world and inspiring environmental stewardship. Rogers Partners is working with Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects to design an innovative on-structure nine-acre park that will be interwoven over the GA400 freeway. ![]()
